How does the Great Gatsby portray the 1920's?

It's the jazz Age. People are having fun, partying; they're being reckless and materialistic. They're oblivious to the decadence of society, the shallowness of the American Dream; those who are better off live a very separate existence from those in the poorer cl who struggle to make ends meet.
