Can I use tap water to add a gallon or 2 to my fish tank?

I've had a 10 gallon fresh water tank for 2 weeks now with some gold fish and similar fish. I noticed the water level has gone down and wanted to know if I added a galon or 2 of tap would hurt them.Or should I buy distilled water from the store.
