Was "doubting" Thomas given a bad rap by orthodox Christianity?

Was his request for proof, something to satisfy his logical mind, a bad thing? I know I get weary of never having any proof of things that somehow draw belief out of me. And the interesting thing is that Jesus gave him what he required. Doubting Claptic says I believe.... so how bout helping my unbelief?
